How do I know I have carpenter ants and not termites?

Carpenter ants are large, dark ants that push out coarse sawdust-like shavings (not the pellet frass of termites) and are most active at night. They excavate wood to nest rather than eat it. If you see big ants indoors in Clarkston, especially near damp wood, it is worth an inspection.

Where do carpenter ants nest in Clarkston homes?

They favor damp or aging wood — around leaky windows and roofs, in decks and porches, in wall voids near plumbing, and in older shoreline and wooded-lot structures common in Oakland County. Treating the nest and fixing the moisture source is what keeps them from returning.
